Tools for Measuring Environmental Change

This compilation of tools can be used to evaluate environmental factors such as; walkability of a community, availability of healthy food in grocery stores, social supports for diet behaviors, or organizational characteristics of a worksite.

The tools listed on this page have been made available through the cooperation of many different organizations, groups, and agencies from both the public and private sectors. Several of these tools have been formally validated; they are indicated in the description. Others have not been validated, but have been developed by experienced researchers and program planners, using tested questions of others, expert reviewers, and pre-testing to guide their development. If a study has been validated it is necessary to include all the questions in order to retain the validity.

Surveys will continue to be added. If you have a validated survey that you would like to add please complete the following form and submit to Jennifer Culp at jbculp@ucdavis.edu

If you are interested in more information on the development and the next steps for the evaluation tools website please click here for a copy of a presentation that was given at the American Public Health Association annual conference in November 2004. We welcome your feedback and comments.

Note: All tools are in Adobe Acrobat format. You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed on your computer in order to view them. The reader is free and can be downloaded from Adobe by clicking here

The tools have been arranged in groups based upon the primary category of organization or outreach service they were originally developed for. Click the desired category above for a detailed list and description of available tools.
