Marketing the Healthy Transportation Network: Promoting Biking and Walking to Local Elected Officials Statewide

To promote biking and walking statewide, the Healthy Transportation Network strives to help local officials make significant improvements to the built environment in their communities.
Jeffery Rosenhall will share the key ideas that formed the Healthy Transportation Network social marketing plan, as well as discuss key project issues that have arisen and how the program has had to be flexible and adaptable in its outreach. As the program has evolved, project staff has had to modify and adjust outreach efforts to successfully engage local electeds and get Healthy Transportation Network technical assistance projects moving.

About the Speaker: Jeffery Rosenhall, MA has worked in public health since 1999 when he became a California Wellness Center Academic Fellow focused on violence prevention work at the Trauma Department located within the Alameda County Medical Center-Highland Hospital campus. His work in Oakland also included domestic violence and traffic safety, specifically pedestrian safety, which helped him foster an interest in traffic-related injury prevention. Jeffery has been coordinating the Healthy Transportation Network's efforts for the past year.

Trends from the California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey (1999-2003): Can statewide social marketing campaigns impact fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity among 9- to 11-year-old children?

Angie Keihner, MS, Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section, DHS
To track dietary intake, physical activity (PA), overweight, and recall of the California Children’s 5 a Day—Power Play! Campaign (PP!) for state-level surveillance of 9-11 year old children. Program growth and findings among low-income groups will be discussed.
About the Speaker: Angie Keihner, MS is a Research Scientist with the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services. With a background in Health Psychology she has spent the past five years managing the California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey, a statewide surveillance system for dietary and physical activity practices and overweight status among 9- to 11-year-old children.
